You see, I've suffered from three of the most common sleep disorders, in some combination, all of my life: Sleep Apnea, Insomnia, and Restless Leg Syndrome. For a long time I knew there was a problem, but I constantly brushed it off. There was never enough time to follow up on it, or I figured any solutions would be too expensive. A good ole dash of denial never hurt, either.
I just kind of dragged through life accepting what I was going through as normal. Just accepting it.
But then, over time, the symptoms started to take their toll.
Besides having a disastrous affect on mood swings, one of the next big…and serious…side effects of a sleep disorder is loss of both short term and long term memory. I still get chills when I remember the exact moment it happened. I was getting ready for work one fine day, and sat down on the edge of the bed to put on my shoes.
I didn’t know how to tie them.
It sounds ludicrous, cliché even, I know. But this was not a “brain fart” that everyone gets from time to time. I sat there for nearly five minutes, not having the slightest clue what to do. (And I know because the alarm clock taunted me all the way, just as it did whenever my Insomnia flared up).
Not being able to do the simplest thing appalled me. It's like my brain refused to function--I didn't even know where to start. I was an otherwise healthy male in his mid 30s feeling like I was in my mid 80s.
Incidents like that continued, but then the severity increased, and the situation grew worse. I started forgetting how to do simple aspects of my job, and being a 911 dispatcher, that is NOT a good thing. Eventually, my short-term memory had all but evaporated. A police officer would tell me something on the radio--I would hear it, understand it, but then immediately--instantly forget it! Utterly, completely. I couldn’t even remember what the transmission might have been about. It's like words would splash on my head like water, without ever sinking in.
Especially considering I had other people’s lives in my hands, I finally went to get help. I visited doctor upon doctor, desperately seeking relief. Some blew me off, blamed it on my job or the extreme hours it demanded (rotating shifts, odd hours, excessive overtime) and of course, other doctors just wanted to throw pills at me.
(Like a drugged dispatcher is an good idea…)
